History Comes Alive! AHS Book Clubs Meet Author Alan Gratz!
What an unforgettable Wednesday for our AHS book club members! Our students experienced history first-hand, making meaningful connections between literature and the real world.
First, our 9th-grade and Main Campus Book Clubs traveled to Fredericksburg, TX, for a private tour and conference at the Pacific War Museum. Students delved deep into World War II history, gaining a powerful, factual foundation.
Then, the educational journey continued as we headed to Austin to meet celebrated historical fiction author Alan Gratz at the release event for his new book, War Games!
This entire experience tied together perfectly! AHS students have been reading Gratz's incredible books like Refugee and Grenade, which often tell WWII stories from different characters' points of view, showing the harsh realities of war for all sides. They were able to take what they learned at the museum and make factual connections directly to his stories.
It was an inspiring day that reinforced the important lesson: learning about the past is crucial to building a better future. Students were deeply interested and genuinely grateful for this unique opportunity!
A massive shout-out to: Mrs. Rocio Villarreal (AHS 9th Grade Campus Librarian), Ms. Jackie Rodriguez (AHS 9th Grade Campus Library Aide), Mrs. Jessica Morales (AHS Main Campus Librarian), Mrs. Saralysia Benavidez (AHS Main Campus Library Aide), and to the AHS Administrative Team for their unwavering support!
Love was in the air—and on the shelves—at the Bulldog Library!
We were honored to host the award-winning author John Schu. Our students and faculty were deeply moved by his insights on his 2024 SLJ Best Book of the Year, *Louder than Hunger*, as well as his beautiful messages about acceptance and self-love. His constant reminder to "always take care of your heart" resonates powerfully in today’s world. It was an unforgettable experience for our English classes to see the author bring the very pages they are studying to life right before their eyes. Thank you, Mr. Schu, for advocating for libraries and showing our readers how much their own stories matter.
