FRIDAY BASEBALL: Alexander’s Lorenzo pitches five-inning shutout

Alexander’s offense had 11 hits at the plate, while pitcher Ronaldo Lorenzo fanned four batters and allowed just two hits in a five-inning 10-0 shutout of Davenport on Feb. 21 in the Border Olympics.

Andrew De Leon had three of the Bulldogs’ eight RBIs.

United South opened up the day on Feb. 21 with a 2-1 win over Pasadena Memorial and ended the day with a 5-3 win over Edinburg North.

Against Pasadena Memorial, the Panthers saw seven strikeouts from winning pitcher Roman Martinez, who allowed just one hit and no earned runs, with Kevin Martinez earning the two-inning save.

In just a three-inning game against Edinburg North, a grounder by Martin Lopez scored both JP Briseno and Ivan Saenz to secure the 5-3 win.

Despite the cold, United was hot with wins of 7-3 against Vista Ridge and 5-4 against Floresville.

An RBI single by Andres Rizo broke a 2-2 tie to Vista Ridge in the third inning, and starting pitcher Alonso Barbarena went all five innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run. Rizo finished with two RBIs.

In a three-inning win against Floresville, United allowed three runs in the third inning to tie it 4-4, but a wild pitch scored Juan Charles to give United the 5-4 win.

LBJ used a two-run fourth inning to get past Houston Westside 5-3. Leonardo Alvarez lined out to score Enrique Loyola, then Mark Flores hit an RBI single for the 5-3 lead.

Martin beat Floresville 3-2. A fielder’s choice grounder by Ruben Hernandez scored Omar Garza to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the third inning. Frankie Cantu and Hernandez each pitched three innings and combined to give up just three hits.

Also in baseball action on Feb. 21, Nixon lost 9-3 to Clemens.
