Andrea Nunez makes history as first Laredo volleyball player on TSWA All-State team

Andrea Nunez made history this year by becoming the first volleyball player from Laredo to be named to the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 6A All-State Third Team. As an outside hitter for Alexander High School, her achievement marks a milestone for the city’s volleyball community and puts Laredo on the map in a sport traditionally dominated by larger metropolitan areas.

Nunez’s recognition comes as she prepares for the next chapter of her volleyball career at the University of Texas at Arlington. The prestigious accolade, a reflection of her outstanding performance on the court, took her by surprise.

“I was definitely not expecting that award at all,” Nunez said. “So shocked but so appreciative and blessed to have earned such a valuable award.”

Her journey to this remarkable achievement wasn’t easy. It required years of hard work, countless hours of practice, and unwavering dedication to her sport. Yet Nunez remains grounded, crediting her success to the love and support of those around her.

“Definitely my family with the endless amount of support that I get from them, but most importantly I love the sport,” Nunez said. “The people it brings you, to practically dedicating yourself to it, is what’s the best part about playing volleyball.”

For Nunez, volleyball is more than just a game. It’s a passion that has shaped her life, taught her valuable lessons, and connected her with a community of like-minded individuals. Her recent honor is not just a personal milestone but also a testament to the collective effort of her team, coaches, and supporters who believed in her potential.

“I am truly humbled and incredibly grateful for the opportunity to represent Laredo with this prestigious award,” Nunez said. “It is a true honor, and I am deeply thankful for the recognition.”

Nunez hopes her success inspires younger athletes in her hometown to pursue their dreams with determination and passion. She understands the importance of setting an example for those who look up to her and embraces the responsibility with pride.

“I hope they saw me accomplish everything I once dreamed of at their age,” Nunez said. “Each award I’ve earned is a testament to the hard work, perseverance and dedication I’ve poured into this sport. My message to them and to anyone chasing a dream is never give up, stay focused and always dream big. The journey may be tough, but the rewards are worth it.”

As Nunez transitions to collegiate volleyball, she carries with her not just the skills she’s honed on the court but also the pride of representing Laredo. Her story is one of breaking barriers, inspiring others and demonstrating that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.
