UISD basketball rivalries set to shape District 30-6A race

The District 30-6A race will be significantly impacted by local rivalries this week as Alexander and United gear up for what could be an unbeaten showdown, while LBJ and United South look to bounce back before facing off.

United will host Alexander in their rivalry matchup at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10. The Longhorns are looking to gain momentum and get one step closer to a playoff spot, while the Bulldogs are on a dominant run.

Alexander (20-4, 3-0) aims to stay unbeaten in league play after rolling past LBJ 81-47 last Friday. The Longhorns (12-9, 2-0) secured a 47-41 road victory against Eagle Pass.

Their two matchups last year were both one-possession games, decided by a combined six points. Alexander won 33-30 on the road in the first round and 42-39 at home in the second.

Before taking on the Bulldogs, the Longhorns will play at LBJ at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. LBJ (6-18, 0-2), coming off last week's loss to Alexander, looks to rebound against United before facing United South. The Wolves will hit the road for their rivalry matchup at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

United South (16-7, 1-1) is also attempting to rebound this week. The Panthers fell 67-62 at Medina Valley this past Friday. Before hosting the Wolves, the Panthers will travel to Eagle Pass (12-7, 1-1) for a 7:30 p.m. game Tuesday.

United South swept last year’s rivalry series, winning 54-37 at home in the first round and escaping with a 52-48 overtime victory on the road in the second round.

In District 30-5A, Nixon will travel to Mission for a 2:30 p.m. game Tuesday before hosting Roma at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Mustangs (18-9, 5-1) have been rolling in district play, defeating Cigarroa 97-55 and Juarez-Lincoln 85-6. Nixon currently sits in first place in the district race and controls its destiny for another district title.

The Toros (6-15, 3-3) are looking to bounce back after losing to Nixon and falling 72-50 at Mission last Friday. They will visit Palmview (16-11, 4-1) on Tuesday before hosting Rio Grande City (18-9, 5-2) on Friday.

Martin hopes to build on its 45-38 win over Palmview with a Friday road trip to face Mission Veterans Memorial at 3:30 p.m. Mission Veterans Memorial currently occupies last place in the district standings.

St. Augustine is coming off a dominant 93-67 win over St. Joseph Academy. This week, the Knights will host a Wednesday night special against the St. Joseph Flyers. St. Augustine holds second place in TAPPS 5A District 3.
